I’ve been thinking about it since the clip was originally posted: Why is this performance so striking?
Even when we had no context, it was still heartbreaking and a little bit frightening. Now that we know exactly what went down, it struck me today that this isn’t just a performance, it’s actually Santana’s nightmare.
The staging is overly dramatic, even for glee. It’s darker than usual, half the time the other people on stage aren’t even lit as they move around Santana at an almost frantic pace sometimes.
But it’s part of the vocals that really set me a little on edge. The backing vocals are people literally yelling, “Rumour has it” throughout the entire song. Her biggest fear was that people would talk about her behind her back, and now everyone will be doing exactly that.
I don’t think Glee has ever done anything quite so subtly psychological.
